Overview: Collaboration is the activity of human beings working together to achieve a common objective. Collaborative computing is a set of advanced computing technologies that will facilitate the ability of people in the automotive industry to communicate using the Automotive Network eXchange®, the Internet, and other networks. The Collaborative Computing Work Group was formed in 1997 to investigate these technologies and the business opportunities they represent. The scope of our investigation is limited to communication between trading partners.
Computer-based collaboration is a relatively new, diverse, and potentially beneficial area of opportunity. There are areas ready for immediate application, and areas where further development is needed. To provide a snapshot of the current environment, this document describes, evaluates, and assesses these technologies to help organizations craft solutions that address collaborative issues.
This document summarizes the application of collaborative technologies from the perspective of business drivers, processes, and values, and it addresses the current state of these technologies from this business perspective. From the onset, the work group has concentrated on activities of the automotive industry that represent the way the automotive industry conducts business electronically. The document also addresses how these technologies can be applied to streamline communications and correspondence between trading partners.
The work group discusses business processes and collaborative technologies by category and at a high level. This document does not discuss specific products (which are changing and reaching the market daily). Our intent is to provide the reader with a broad overview of the relationships of technology to processes, and potential areas of application, along with benefits and risks. This overview will provide focus and insight as solutions are sought and integrated into the automotive community.
To prepare the paper, the work group piloted a collaborative tool. This pilot exposed several issues that trading partners should consider when using collaborative technologies. These issues are addressed in the paper.
